How people organize their living and work space can affect people’s experiences in those spaces. Take for example, the concept of Feng Shui. It is the practice of arranging pieces in living spaces in order to create balance and harmony between the individual and their environment. It is said that good Feng Shui can bring more ease and relaxation into your life. Another example of a philosophical aspect to organization is the tidying consultant Marie Kondo. She has her own organization philosophy called the “KonMari method”, that centers around the idea of only keeping belongings that “spark joy”. Her philosophies all center around how organizing your living space can help you live a more satisfying lifestyle. There is also a psychological aspect to organizing. Some people are unable to work peacefully unless their desk is clean. Others may find it difficult to feel at ease if their room is messy. Through various studies, people have been found to produce more stress hormones when they are surrounded by clutter. The problem can even extend to overly large furniture in small spaces that makes the room feel cramped. By studying the psychology and philosophy behind clean and organized spaces, I want to create a design solution to help young people organize their surroundings to ease the mind of these common worries.

1. How can organizing one’s home and belongings help one’s personal happiness and ease of living?
2. How can the philosophy and psychology behind organization be applied to a lifestyle guide that will teach young people how to organize their surroundings?
3. What currently existing decluttering lifestyle guides are there that utilize philosophy? How do these existing solutions apply their theories to their promoted ways of living?
Throughout this project, I have learned about various philosophies, and how your surroundings can affect your mood and overall performance and happiness and many aspects of your life. My research journey has been an interesting and informative one, especially since I got to learn more about my culture throughout this process.
